My Favourite Five Pieces From Another Country

This brand is owned by Paul de Zwart, who was the founding publisher of Wallpaper* Magazine. They make furniture and home accessories with a focus on simplicity and functionality. Paul favours the unpretentious craft styles of Shaker, Scandinavian, British country kitchen and Japanese woodwork.  He collaborates with designers to create pared-down, utilitarian pieces with a contemporary touch.  The quality furniture is certainly built to last using time-honoured traditional methods but with the aid of modern technology.  The timber is responsibly sourced from certified suppliers.  To give you an idea of the products on show, I’ve picked out five of my favourite pieces to share with you.

Day Bed Two: This is perfect for a spot of casual afternoon snoozing or as a guest bed.  The pale ash wood frame features a slatted wooden base which sits upon brass legs.  The padded top acts as a cushion come mattress, and the bolster give your head the perfect place to rest.  This is available in various colours; navy, light natural, khaki, red, grey, ice green or aubergine.  The mid-century Scandinavian design is simple and stylish.  Measurements are 40cm high, 190cm wide and 80cm in depth – £2950.

Desk One: I love this home office desk which is from the first collection.  It’s such a beautiful piece of furniture which could also be used as a console table or dressing table.  The simple shape and design are reminiscent of a school desk.  I’m unsure if I could get much work done, though, because I’d just be gliding my hands across the surface and staring at it for hours on end!  It features a slide-out centrally located drawer for your clutter, an indentation to hold pencils and a tidy cable slot.  So it’s got everything you need but is pared back. You can order this in oak natural, ash natural or ash black.  The measurements are 74cm high, 120cm wide and 50cm deep – £1030.

Side Table One: This cute side table, come stool, come bedside resting place whispers Shaker simplicity.  It’s ideal for popping next to your sofa as a landing spot for your coffee cup.  It features three turned legs which have been attached using a peg system.  You can buy this in solid certified oak, ply oak, or lacquered black chestnut wood.  The measurements are 50cm high, 40cm wide and 40cm in depth – £305.

Pitcher: Treat yourself to a handmade pottery pitcher.  This stoneware has been glazed inside and is available in terracotta, natural white or black.  It can be used for liquids, or you may prefer to make it a vase.  The measurements are 16.8cm high and 11.6cm in diameter – £58.

Swan Candle Stick Holder: This is such a genius idea. It’s a candle holder with a little compartment to hold matches and a striking strip.  It resembles a Swan matchbox and is something you can sit on your kitchen table.  The measurements are 7.5cm high, 3.6cm wide and 11.8cm deep – £21.

Another Country Shop and Stock

The showroom opened in 2010 and is situated on Crawford Street, close to Marylebone High Street and Chiltern Street.  This is a shop combined with offices on the lower ground floor.  This isn’t a huge space, but it is airy, uncluttered, and a relaxing place to browse.  You can admire the wooden furniture selection, which includes sofas, daybeds, dining tables and chairs, benches, stools, desks, storage and shelving.  They also sell ceiling, wall, floor and desk lights.  Home accessories range from cushions and throws to tableware and candle holders.

You’ll also find a thoughtful selection of sustainable products in the store which fit with Paul’s ethos, some of which are exclusive in the UK or Europe.  Paul’s picks include an eco-friendly household cleaning brand called Common Good.  There are candles by Scents of Land which contain 100% natural ingredients.  A Danish brand called Sort of Coal makes soap from white coal.  Also stocked is David Mellor cutlery, a selection of brass objects by Carl Auböck and Irish linen napkins by 31 Chapel Lane.
