Shops: spotlight on Drink, Shop & Do

Drink, Shop & Do is based in Caledonian Road, Kings Cross.  This quirky design shop also has a café bar and hosts interesting events.  They stock a wide range of gifts, home accessories and costume jewellery from emerging designers alongside stationerycontemporary greeting cards, wrapping paper, art and design books, art prints and sweets.  Everything you see in the café bar is also for sale, from the tea cup you drink from to the table you sit at.  All the furniture and crockery is beautiful, original and vintage.  Drink, Shop & Do is a lovely place to hang out.

The store owners met on their first day of secondary school and have been friends ever since.  One spring time afternoon spent discussing what would really make them happy … Kristie wanted to have a place where everything was pretty and all those pretty things were for sale.  Where you could have tea, cake, crumpets or cocktails whilst playing scrabble and above all an old fashioned sweet shop!  Coralie wanted a shop full of beautiful things from local designers but not a stuffy one where you couldn’t touch anything.   A place where people could drink, laugh and do something crafty.  So they opened the ‘Christmas Cooler’ as a Pop-up, and 7 months later Drink, Shop & Do was born.

The store stocks brands like; A Two Pipe Problem, Turnaround UK, Chase & Wonder, Zeena, Rachel Loves Bob, Sort Design and Acorn & Will.  To give you an idea of what you can buy, the owners Kristie and Coralie have recommended 5 products …

Recycled Tween Picnic Rug by Tweedmill £15 / Tote Bag The Bee’s Knees by Alphabet bags £10.50 / Tunnocks Cushion by Nikki McWilliams £30 /
Clock by Fargform £40 / Beetle Mug by Charlotte Wainwright Design £10

Kristie and Coralie explained the rationale behind the shop name – “we wanted to choose a catchy name that said exactly what we do on the tin!  In the afternoons you can book afternoon tea and perhaps a ‘do’ for your party or just turn up for lunch and cake.  During weekday evenings we hold ‘dos’ – these are activities just for fun that you can turn up to accompanied by a fully stocked bar and food.  On Friday and Saturday nights we have DJs and dancing until 2am!”

If you attend the week-night ‘do’s’ they provide the glitter, glue, card, papier-mâché materials and clay for free so you can save your cash to splash on the cocktails.  They tell me their clientele are creative people looking for an interesting night out so you’ll meet some likeminded people.

The interiors are a whole mixture of vintage furniture, mismatching retro chairs and tables, wooden flooring.  The shop has striped red and white painted walls and one wall is completely taken up by the back-lit sweet shop.  You’ll find the jewellery pinned to a cork-board wall and shelves displaying the products on the other wall.

The advice Kristie and Coralie would pass on to wannabe store owners – “your budget doesn’t have to be as big as you think to start off.  Be prepared to work 100 hours a week and accept all the help and support you can from friends and family!”
