Albie Restaurant The Hoxton Blackfriars Southwark

As restaurants with outside space open up, we were eager to sit down and enjoy a meal cooked by someone other than ourselves. I booked a table for two at the Albie Restaurant at The Hoxton Hotel in Blackfriars, Southwark. It was a tad cold, so we put on our coats and walked over to Blackfriars, which took about half an hour. We were thankful for the outdoor heaters and spacious dining area in front of The Hoxton Hotel. The Albie currently has three menus to choose from, the Hox Classics (12-10 pm), EggBreak (7 am-3 pm) and Pecking Order (12-10 pm). If you’re looking for restaurants with outside tables in Southwark, the best places for lunch in Blackfriars or weekend brunch in SE1, check out the Albie Restaurant at The Hoxton.

“With plenty of outside pavement space, the Albie is perfect for alfresco dining in Blackfriars. Hang out in Southwark as you tuck into an egg dish or something tasty from the Hox Classics menu.”

Albie Restaurant Hox Classics and EggBreak Menus

We booked a table for 12.45 to take advantage of the Hox Classics and EggBreak menus. I’ll start with the EggBreak Menu, which has an excellent (or should I say eggcellent) choice of egg dishes. Choose from a Tabasco Frittata, Benny (Benedict), Royal, Smashed Avocado with Poached Egg or Egg and Bacon Toasty with Cheese. Their take on the BLT is the BTA Bap with smoked streaky bacon heritage tomato, spiced avocado inside a potato brioche bun. A Vegan Omelette made with chickpeas is available if you don’t do eggs. We settled on the Sweet Potato Rosti with poached eggs (well done). It comprised of wilted kale with the sweet potato rosti, a thick slice of goats’ cheese, and the poached eggs on top. A dollop of dill yoghurt with a sprinkling of pine nuts and pomegranate seeds, and it looked good enough to eat! It was super tasty; we enjoyed every mouthful. We appreciated having a meal made by a professional, and it has been months of having to make do with our home-cooked efforts!

The other menu is Hox Classics which is an excellent all-day offering. It includes firm favourites like Burgers, Fish ‘n Chips, Hox Monsieur, Linguini Carbonara and a Tabbouleh Citrus Salad. My partner and I wanted to share a vegetarian dish, so we selected the Moving Mountains Vegan Burger. The succulent plant protein patty, which tasted quite ‘meaty’, is placed inside a beetroot bun with melted vegan cheese, burger sauce and a garnish. The vegan burger is served with crinkle-cut chips, which swung the decision because we fancied some fries.

We wanted the Tarte Tatin, a classic apple tart with vanilla ice cream for dessert. Unfortunately, it wasn’t available, so we had the Sticky Toffee Pudding instead, which was very sticky indeed!

The Pecking Order Menu is dedicated to spicy Tennessee chicken, which didn’t appeal to us because we don’t eat poultry. However, I did have a gander at the menu, and you can choose from four pieces of chicken, a whole box or eat your chicken in a sandwich. Add ‘Ziggy’ Fries, Pickles, Slaw or Mac ‘n Cheese to complete your feast. I wish I had looked at this menu in more detail at the restaurant because I probably would have ordered the Mac ‘n Cheese. I will have to go back again!
