While exploring Vauxhall for my blog, I stopped by the Tea House Theatre, a unique venue tucked just behind the station on Vauxhall Walk. Set in what was once an old pub, it now operates as a cosy British café by day and transforms into an intimate theatre by night. If you’re looking for breakfast in Vauxhall, or somewhere atmospheric for tea and cake near the Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens, this place is worth a detour.
“The Tea House Theatre is a hidden gem in Vauxhall where you can tuck into a generous breakfast with a pot of tea and relax in a homely atmosphere,” Homegirl London.
The Tea House Breakfast Menu
The menu leans heavily into British comfort food, particularly breakfasts. I ordered the Half Nelson, their vegetarian fry-up, and asked for the eggs well done. What arrived was a generous plate with two veggie sausages, fried eggs, golden hash browns, baked beans, tomatoes, mushrooms and some buttered toast. The hash browns were exceptionally crisp and satisfying, and the eggs were well done as requested. It’s not a healthy breakfast by any means, most of it looked fried, but sometimes you need to indulge!
Other breakfast mains include their signature Best Full English in London with Cumberland sausages, bacon, black pudding, hash browns, eggs and more, served with toast. There’s also a Scottish Breakfast featuring haggis and salmon, a royal-sounding Buckingham Palace Breakfast with crumpets and strawberry jam, and an Essex Breakfast of ham, egg and chips. For something lighter, try Eggs Benedict or the Caesar’s Choice with whipped feta and beetroot on Roman bread. Prices range from £9 to £16.50 depending on the dish.
Tea is the star here, as you’d expect from the venue’s name. The tea list is long and well-curated, with a focus on loose leaf blends served in big pots wrapped in traditional tea cosies. I went for the Tea House Leaf No.1, a bold house blend of Assam and Ceylon that was rich, malty, and perfectly bracing. Coffee is available, too, but it would be rude not to try the tea.
Helpful Information About The Tea House
Inside, the Tea House Theatre feels part-library, part-living room, part-backstage area. Mismatched Victorian tables, wobbly wooden chairs, and threadbare armchairs fill the space, alongside old books, theatre props, and the odd cat roaming around. There’s a charming sense of chaos, slightly messy, full of personality, and warmly eccentric. I must admit that I felt an urge to tidy up, but had to fight it off and go with the flow.
Outside, there are a few tables that look over the nearby park, which makes a lovely spot for a sunny morning. It’s dog-friendly too, though I left mine at home, which was lucky because she would have been growling at the cats who reside there.
You’ll find a mix of people here, from remote workers nursing a pot of tea to locals catching up, and visitors looking for a classic British experience. I’d recommend it to anyone hosting friends from abroad or simply in need of a leisurely breakfast with a touch of theatrics.
The Tea House Theatre is located at 139 Vauxhall Walk, London SE11 5HL. It’s a short walk from Vauxhall Station and sits just opposite Vauxhall Pleasure Gardens. Open daily for breakfast, brunch, lunch and cakes, and offering afternoon teas and Sunday roasts, it also hosts theatre shows in the evenings.
