Delicious Boxcar Brunch Menu
I already love their Marylebone branch, so I had high hopes for this one. The good news is that their food and coffee are just as fabulous. The menu is a gentle celebration of good bread, great eggs, and plates that feature quality ingredients and strike a balance between healthy and indulgent. I visited twice so I could try different dishes, sometimes my job is just the best!
I started with the matcha and blueberry pancakes, which came beautifully stacked with a dollop of Chantilly on the side. The pancakes had a light earthiness from the dusting of matcha, while the bursts of juicy blueberries were sweet yet tart. If you’re after something slightly healthier, the coconut chia with raspberries and orange is delicate and fresh. Meanwhile, the Skyr yoghurt with house granola, fig and apricot jam and honeyed apples offers a crunchy, creamy contrast that feels like it’s doing you some good. These options cost between £6.50 and £13.
Boxcar knows its way around eggs. You can go all in with the Croissant Benedict, layered with maple bacon, poached eggs, and hollandaise. Or you may prefer the smoked salmon version with spinach and a citrusy sauce maltaise. The avocado on toast is topped with a soft-boiled egg, whipped feta, tomato pesto and seeds for crunch. I was considering the potato and spring onion hash, finished with a fried egg and maple bacon. In the end, I opted for the scrambled eggs with wild mushrooms on toast, finished with a generous grating of pecorino. It was so good, the eggs were creamy, which paired wonderfully with the earthy mushrooms. Egg dishes cost between £14 and £16.
If you’re in the mood for a toastie you’ll probably be tempted by their honey roast ham and smoked cheddar combo or the deli-style pastrami and gouda with mustard sauerkraut. They also do a good line in sandwiches; each served with a bright little mixed leaf salad dressed with citrus and scattered with toasted seeds. The roast chicken and avocado with Isle of Wight tomatoes or tuna and cucumber with lemon mayo are likely to tempt you. Or there’s a mozzarella and golden beetroot option with sundried tomato pesto for the vegetarians. The nourish bowl brings together sweet potato, tofu, avocado and marinated chickpeas with a tahini dressing for those craving something plant-based. Prices are £10-14.
Boxcar’s drinks menu is as considered as the food, spanning expertly made coffee, specialist lattes, and iced drinks. You’ll find everything from a classic flat white to matcha and turmeric blends, along with chai and rich hot chocolate made with real melted chocolate. The iced options are playful and bold—think tropical matcha, ube lemonade, and a blood orange espresso cooler. A short tea list covers classics and herbal infusions. For something stronger, the cocktail selection includes brunch favourites like Bloody Marys and Bellinis, plus house twists like a Matcha Margarita and a chocolatey Espresso Martini.
Later in the day, the café shifts gear into something slower and more grown-up. The team put together a small selection of sharing plates which go down beautifully with a glass or two of biodynamic wine, and the mood becomes low-key and cosy, ideal for an easy evening with friends.
