It was a sunny Saturday, so we headed over to Gecko Coffeehouse in Shoreditch, London E1, for a lovely brunch. It’s a chilled café serving plant-based food alongside excellent speciality coffee. If you’re searching for the best vegan brunch in Shoreditch or somewhere cool to meet a friend for coffee, Gecko Coffeehouse on Bethnal Green Road is a great choice. Whether you’re looking for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or just a coffee and a pastry, it is the kind of place that feels relaxed and welcoming.

The Gecko Breakfast is one of their signature dishes and a perfect option if you’re looking for something hearty. It comes with spiced vegan sausages, harissa potatoes, butter beans, garlic oat yoghurt, chilli oil, and flatbread. Everything is well seasoned and cooked with care. Other savoury choices include portobello tacos with black beans, salsa verde, and corn tortillas, or sourdough topped with avocado, sage and walnut spread, Aleppo pepper, and crispy onions. Mains cost between about £7 and £15.
If you prefer something sweet, the pancakes are a highlight. We also ordered the protein pancakes, which were soft and fluffy, with seasonal fruit, whipped oat cream, maple syrup, and a peanut drizzle. Another option is the blueberry matcha pancakes, layered with oat cream, blueberry compote, and lemon zest for a tangy, refreshing twist. For a lighter start, the acai bowl comes with seasonal fruit, granola, cacao, and peanut butter.
The counter displays a variety of tempting treats, including croissants, pain au chocolat, carrot cake, chocolate chip banana bread, and pecan cookies. These cost from £3 to £5.
Coffee is a real strength here, with their house espresso being a rotating single-origin bean roasted by Curve Coffee Roasters. I had a latte, while my partner enjoyed a flat white; both were smooth and perfectly balanced. Alongside the usual coffees, there are alternative milks and a selection of speciality teas. Drinks are generally priced between £3 and £4.

The interiors are gorgeous with a calm, bohemian feel. Pale wood furniture, soft lighting, hanging textiles and green foliage create a laid-back atmosphere. There are cosy tables for two on the ground floor, and a large room downstairs with plenty of space. Out front and back, there are extra tables, making it a good spot to bring your dog while enjoying the sunshine.
