While my partner was away, I spent time in dog-friendly cafes like Hej Coffee in Elephant and Castle. Although their Bermondsey Square branch closed due to increased rents, making it a longer walk to their SE17 location, the visit is well worth it. I enjoyed their avocado on toast and later returned with my partner to explore more of their menu. If you’re seeking the best coffee shops in Elephant and Castle, brunch spots in SE17, or cafes near Rodney Road, you’ll love Hej.
“Hej is a great neighbourhood café with ample outside space, delicious coffee, tasty breakfast and brunch dishes, and plenty of pastries and croissants,” Homegirl London.
Hej Coffee Breakfast and Brunch Menu
Their artisan coffee, roasted on-site and crafted by expertly trained baristas, is a highlight. Hej sources coffee directly from farmers through established trading companies, ensuring a range of flavours from rare micro lots to more budget-friendly selections. It’s so good that they supply their beans to businesses, restaurants and other cafes. Be sure to check out their roastery at the back of the café. Their perfected espresso blend maintains a consistent taste, while guest coffees add variety to their filter options. Prices are reasonable, with a regular espresso at £2.20, filter coffee at £2.60, and a latte at £3.10. Additionally, they offer a selection of teas, smoothies, and other soft drinks.
Now that your morning coffee is sorted let’s move on to the savouries, pastries, and treats. The selection on display is delectable. Try a salmon or pastrami bagel, tuna toast, cheese and tomato-filled croissant, feta and spinach pastry, avocado bap, or vegan sausage roll for something savoury.
For sweet treats, indulge in a muffin or one of the cakes (carrot, lemon and pistachio, orange and chocolate) or a cinnamon bun. I loved their vegan croissant with apricot jam inside.
Breakfast options are available until 11 am, including porridge or granola with honey and cinnamon and a weekly special with seasonal fruits. They also offer sourdough toast with butter and jam or peanut butter, avocado, or portobello mushrooms on sourdough toast.
Brunch is served until 2 pm and features eggs benedict, royale, Florentine, or portobello with hollandaise sauce and an English muffin. Add extras like bacon, mushrooms, brie, mozzarella, avocado, smoked salmon, scrambled or poached eggs. Prices range from £2.25 to £9.75.
It’s not an all-singing-and-dancing kitchen setup, but what they do is simple yet pleasing. Coupled with their coffee and the surroundings, it’s somewhere I like to spend some time out of the house when I’m working from home. And my dog likes it there!
