While exploring Kennington and Oval at the weekend, I spotted a queue outside Liloo Coffee and Kitchen. Located on Claylands Road, this neighbourhood café is a local favourite for brunch near Oval station, breakfast in Kennington and great coffee in SW8. It’s a peaceful residential spot with a menu full of fabulous flavour-packed dishes and an easy-going atmosphere.
“I only popped in out of curiosity but left knowing I’d found one of my new favourite brunch spots in the area,” Homegirl London.
Brunch Menu At Liloo
Egg dishes are a big draw, with a collection of Hollandaise-topped offerings from a Garlic Kale Florentine to a Salmon Royale, Bacon Blackstone and even a BBQ Brisket Benedict. Then you have a Spanish Chorizo Hash, Turkish Eggs and a Veg or Meaty House for hungry people. I was mega impressed with the Full Veggie House, an artfully arranged plate of crispy halloumi, smashed avocado, poached egg, garlicky mushrooms, spicy bean relish, house potato rosti and sourdough. It was a pleasing plate that ticked both flavour and presentation boxes. Non-egg options include a Vegan or Chicken Poke Bowl and Avocado on Toast. Savoury plates cost £9.50 to £15.90.
Sweet dishes are equally tempting. The French Toast is the star, conjure up thick brioche topped with roasted thyme peaches, whipped mascarpone, honey-roasted almonds, maple syrup and berry coulis, and you’re in brunch heaven. For something less calorific, the Homemade Granola with Greek yoghurt, honey and berry coulis is fresh and fruity. Sweet options range from £8 to £13.50.
Drinks include coffees, teas, fresh juices, and cocktails like Aperol Spritz, Espresso Martini, and Passion Fruit Spritz, plus beers, wine, and cider. Coffee starts around £3, cocktails £8.50 to £11.50.
Helpful Information About Liloo
Inside, Liloo is relaxed with a slightly lived-in charm, scuffed paint and simple furnishings. Walls are adorned with mirrors to reflect light, and there are a few posters highlighting cocktails. The kitchen is tucked away downstairs with a raised platform above providing additional seating. Outdoor picnic-style tables at the front make it perfect for sunny days. It’s the kind of place that works just as well for a solo breakfast as it does for a catch-up with friends.
