This business is all about simplifying the buying process for the consumer for bed and mattress. The company was launched in May 2014 by Adam Black (ex-founder and MD of Feather & Black) and Matthew Hardcastle (formerly eBay and Sofa.com). Adam and Matthew believed that many existing bed retailers made the purchase journey overly complicated and expensive. Their vision was to have a market-leading website and one London-based showroom for customers to view the products. Because the beds and mattresses are directly from the factory to the consumer and commissions to sales staff are not required, no expensive overheads are passed onto the consumer. Their prices are always highly competitive, so they don’t need to entice customers with sales or promotions. They’ve done all the hard work making the best mattresses, creating the perfect bed bases and designing lovely headboards. You must pick out your favourite bed style, decide on the upholstery fabric and settle on a mattress.
Peony Bedstead
Start by choosing your single, double, king or super king bed size, which is all UK standard sizes. Next, you select the base, a bedstead that rests on your feet. Two types of feet are available: the Traditional Turned style or Sharks Tooth. Both styles are made from wood and come in Beech, Oak, Walnut or Ebony. Opt for a divan-style base if you don’t want to vacuum under the bed. If you require storage, go for a two-drawer divan. If you buy a king-size bed, this also comes as an ottoman where the entire mattress area lifts to reveal masses of storage space underneath. This is worth considering if you want somewhere to store your bedding and extra clothing.

Then, you can choose fifteen different bed headboards, which you can combine with any of the bases I’ve mentioned. If you want a shaped headboard, select the Burdock with clean lines. Classical lovers might prefer the Regency-inspired Camelia or the Foxtail. Retro fans will love Campion, reminiscent of the sixties with button detailing. Urban dwellers hankering after that loft living look might prefer the Iris. The newest additions are immensely striking Holly and the mid-century modern-inspired Daisy and Willow, which has a plush pillow-style headboard. I thought the headboard selection was spot on, and there is certainly something to suit different tastes without making it too confusing.

The fun part is choosing your bed frame and headboard upholstery fabric. Eighty in-house fabrics comprise good-quality linen, brushed cotton, soft wool, plush velvet, crushed velvet, and more. These fabrics come in some beautiful colours, and my favourites were Blossom in the Velvet Feel, Flint in the Fine Corduroy, Heather in the Broad Weave, and Denim Moleskin. You also have the option to select from prominent fabric houses like Linwood, Designers Guild, Romo, J Brown, Andrew Martin, and many more.
Bed Upholstery Fabrics
That’s the bed sorted; now for the all-important mattress. Button and Sprung specialises in pocket-sprung mattresses (no memory foam) because they believe these are the best. There are nine different options with different comfort levels, which range from 1,800 springs right up to 15,800 springs. These aren’t standard springs either; they are patented IQ springs that deliver support where you need it most. This means that if two people of different sizes sleep in the same bed, they have equal progressive support. Then you get a layer of mini pocket springs that only their manufacturer has the technology to create. The mattress fillings are all-natural and include wool, hemp, cotton and flax grown in the UK. This attention to detail means you get the best night’s sleep … ever!

You get a generous one hundred nights’ sleep return policy for extra peace of mind. They can make you a bespoke bed if you have an unusual-sized bed. Sometimes, antique frames or four-poster beds might require something out of the ordinary, in which case, they can accommodate you. Here, you will find two floors showcasing the products. Upstairs, you will find the bed section and every type of headboard. You can also browse the fabrics and pick up some samples to take home. There is also a little area for children to colour in some pictures while you browse the collection.

Up another flight of stairs, you come to a room with mattresses. Here, you can take your time, lie down on each mattress, and get a feel for which one suits you best. It’s a friendly and relaxed place to shop for a bed, and they promise to make you tea or coffee when you arrive.

If you buy a bed or a mattress, two people will deliver it within a two-hour slot, and delivery is free within a 65-mile radius. They can set up your bed, lug your mattress up the stairs, and remove your old mattress and all the packaging.
