We wanted to check out Café Mondo on Peckham Road for their awesome sandwiches, so we headed there for an early lunch. Plenty of people were already happily munching away when we arrived, which is always a good sign. We grabbed a table outside, ordered a couple of house-made lemonades and got down to the important business of choosing our sandwiches. If you’re looking for some of the best sandwiches in Peckham, veggie lunch options in South London or somewhere casual to eat near Camberwell, Café Mondo is one to visit.

Café Mondo Sandwiches and Subs Menu
I scanned the veggie options, including the Harissa Aub with aubergine, harissa mayo, roasted sesame tahini, pickles, and Turkish peppers, and the Mondo Verde with jazzed-up broccoli, creamy mozzarella, confit tomatoes, frisée, and ‘Jazz’ spread. After much deliberation, we finally settled on two to share: the Chickpea Caesar and Latke Frango.
The Chickpea Caesar comes on toasted tin loaf with confit chickpeas, mixed leaves, crouton, herbs, pickled onion, Caesar dressing and Parmesan. It was messy to eat but worth all the hard work. I’ve never had chickpeas in a sandwich before, and I’m now a big fan!
The Latke Frango is a vegan sub loaded with latke, peri, pea salsa, shrettuce (shredded lettuce), and sticks; I think those are potato sticks. I was already quite full from the first half of my Chickpea Caesar, but the sub beckoned, and before I knew it, I’d demolished it and was scraping the wrapping for leftovers! Both were packed with flavour and made for a satisfying lunch. Sandwiches and subs cost around £10–£12.50, while the counter sarnies are £6–£7.
If you’re a meat eater, you’ll have even more to tempt you. The Everything Cutlet pairs chicken cutlet with Red Leicester, pickle salad and ranch, while the Club Tunis combines house-sliced turkey with harissa toum, roasted sesame tahini, pickles and Turkish peppers. The subs include the Mondo Combo with mortadella, finocchiona, ventricina, provolone and ‘Jazz’ spread, along with the Turkey Combo, Mondo Frango and a BLT with crispy bacon and salami XO. I’ll have to bring a few meat-eaters with me next time.
You can add a pickle pot, pink kraut, charred corn salad or latke on the side, along with a choice of dips. If you have room for something sweet, you can choose from cookies, deep-fried treacle tart, or an ice cream sandwich. Sides cost £4, dips £1.50 and sweet treats £3.50–£5. They also offer a Midweek Mondo Meal from Tuesday to Friday: a sarnie, side, and packaged drink for £15.
We tried the lemonades, but noticed they also serve beers, jugs of sangria, and other refreshments. You definitely need something to drink after one of these big beasts.
Helpful Information About Café Mondo Peckham
Café Mondo is at 42 Peckham Road, London SE5 8PX, between Peckham and Camberwell. Toad Bakery is next door, while Camberwell College of Arts is across the road. Peckham Rye and Denmark Hill are the nearest main stations, with plenty of buses running along Peckham Road. Café Mondo is open Tuesday to Sunday from 10 am to 4 pm, with the full menu available from noon, and Thursday to Saturday evenings from 6 pm to 11 pm.
Inside, the interiors have a student-come-retro vibe; it reminds me a bit of breakfast joints in Chicago. They have some tables inside and counter seating, plus plenty of tables and benches out the front. For more information, go to the Café Mondo website.
