Japanese Cakes And Boba Tea At Kova Battersea

Kova Patisserie in Battersea Power Station is a must-visit for Japanese cakes and boba tea in London. Located in a sleek glass box beside the power station itself, this café combines French pastry technique with Japanese flavours, offering a light, elegant twist on classic desserts. There’s a calm indoor space and a few outdoor seats, and the glass display counter is always filled with tempting slices. Whether you’re in the mood for matcha, cream, or something chocolatey, there’s plenty to choose from.

Choose Your Kova Cake

Kova is best known for its mille crêpe cakes. Each slice is made from dozens of delicate French crêpes layered with lightly whipped pastry cream. The Earl Grey version has a tea-glazed top and cornflower petals, while the chocolate mille crêpe features Valrhona chocolate and a fine coating of cocoa powder. Oreo lovers will enjoy the version sprinkled with cookie crumble. The Dubai chocolate mille crêpe is currently trending with its rich, limited-edition blend of pistachio and chocolate cream that feels both indulgent and refined. Matcha, vanilla, durian and hojicha chestnut flavours are also available.

If you prefer something fluffier, the shortcakes are soft and light with whipped cream or tea-infused custards. I’ve returned to the strawberry shortcake more than once; it’s made with chiffon sponge, fresh strawberries and vanilla cream. The matcha shortcake is another standout, topped with matcha panna cotta, and the hojicha chestnut version includes roasted chestnut cream and hojicha jelly. These are all beautifully balanced in texture and flavour.

Kova also does a brilliant range of tarts and cheesecakes. The matcha tart has a crisp shortcrust base and a dense, velvety matcha ganache, making it rich and bittersweet. For something creamy and comforting, try the Japanese soufflé cheesecake. It’s feather-light and not too sweet, perfect with a pot of tea. The pistachio Basque cheesecake is deeper and toastier, with a golden, caramelised top and earthy, nutty flavour. The slice can purchase all of these, or you can pre-order full-size cakes for birthdays and special occasions.

Mille crêpe cake slices cost between £7.80 and £10.20. Whole cakes are available to pre-order from around £45. Shortcakes and tarts are priced between £6.90 and £7.80 per slice. Cheesecake slices range from £6.40 to £7.90.

Pair With A Kova Bobo Tea

To drink, Kova serves a wide selection of boba tea, from traditional to creative flavours. I usually go for the dirty matcha boba, served either iced or warm with brown sugar tapioca pearls. It’s rich but not overpowering, especially with oat milk. Other flavours include taro, Oreo cocoa, and classic Ceylon milk tea. If you’re not in the mood for milk tea, there’s an excellent range of fruit teas too. The iced super fruit tea is a refreshing mix of strawberry, mango, orange, passion fruit and lime, or you can try the sparkling lime and lemon jasmine tea. Boba tea drinks start at £5.40 and go up to about £6.90, depending on the flavour.
