A friend introduced me to HJEM, a charming Danish café tucked away on Launceston Place in South Kensington. The cosy interior, relaxed vibe, and warm Scandinavian decor make it a delightful spot for excellent coffee, fresh bakes, and light lunches. The name HJEM means “home” in Norwegian, and it couldn’t be more fitting because it feels like the kind of place you’ll want to return to again and again. HJEM is a must-visit if you’re looking for independent coffee shops near Gloucester Road or hidden gems in London W8.
“HJEM is a lovely hidden spot for a quiet coffee and delicious pastries or a light lunch,” Homegirl London.
HJEM Coffee and Food
The coffee is sourced from East London’s Climpson & Sons and is brewed with care. I ordered a latte while my friend chose a flat white, which didn’t last long because they were so good!
There’s a thoughtful selection of other drinks as well. Alongside coffee, you’ll find organic teas by Canton Tea, matcha and turmeric lattes, hot chocolate, and cold-pressed juices. The smoothies are vibrant and filling — try the “Ultimate Green” with spinach, pineapple, and ginger or the “Breakfast Smoothie” with banana, berries, and Greek yoghurt. Cold drinks include sparkling posh pops in fabulous flavours like elderflower or ginger beer with chilli.
HJEM’s food menu embraces its Nordic roots, emphasising simple, nourishing dishes made with quality ingredients. If you arrive early, try the yoghurt pot with HJEM blueberry compote and gluten-free sprouted buckwheat granola, which is a wholesome choice. Their all-day offerings feature open rye sandwiches topped with smashed avocado, house-made egg or tuna salad, salmon with avocado and pesto, prosciutto with avocado, and Sträntchas. We both chose the cheese toastie, which was hot, crisp, and filled with outstanding cheese. I had initially planned on the avocado toast, but they had just run out.
There’s always a tempting display of cakes and baked goods for something sweet. We shared a slice of chocolate cake and a piece of coconut cake, which were delicious and satisfying. Brownies, blondies, and other seasonal treats are available at the counter. In the morning, you can take advantage of buttery croissants, buns, or pastries.
Helpful Information About HJEM
Inside this adorable coffee shop, you’ll discover a simple Scandi design with a counter in front and seating towards the back. There’s also a small garden area for outdoor dining when the weather permits. We started by sitting outside, but a sudden shower drove us indoors. The good news is that it’s dog-friendly, so furry friends are welcome.
HJEM has two locations: the one I visited is at 3 Launceston Place, London W8, and the other is at 157 Gloucester Road, SW7 4TH. The Launceston Place café is remarkably tranquil, on a pretty street lined with white townhouses near a florist and a small art gallery. Opening hours are from 7.30 am on weekdays and from 8.30 am on weekends, closing at 5.00 pm daily. The nearest stations are Gloucester Road and High Street Kensington. For more information, check the HJEM Instagram. Enjoy!
