Tucked away on New Row, it’s small, welcoming, and focused on doing a few things well, mainly mash, sausages, pies, and gravy. “Build your ideal British meal with your choice of mash, perfectly paired with your favourite sausage, pie and gravy,” Homegirl London.

Mother Mash Menu

The menu is simple but packed with choice, with mash taking centre stage. Start by choosing your base of creamy British Maris Piper mash, known for being some of the finest spuds. Try Irish varieties like Champ, a traditional Irish Mash with butter, cheddar, and spring onions, or Colcannon with cabbage and onions. Bubble and Squeak is the old-school English favourite, with fried mash, cabbage, peas, and onions. Alternatively, there’s a Sweet Potato Mash with carrot and chilli. Pair your mash with sausages or a hearty pie, and finish with gravy.

My partner went for the Cheddar Mash with spinach sausages and vegetable gravy. The mash was luxuriously creamy with a generous hit of mature cheddar, while the sausages delivered a big flavour without feeling too heavy. Other sausage options include Cumberland, pork and chilli, the London Smokey (pork with honey), the Mother Plucker (chicken, garlic and white wine), and a vegan Lincolnshire. Each dish comes with two sausages for £14.50.

I chose the Classic Mash with the roasted vegetable and chickpea pie, also topped with the vegetable gravy. The pie had a lovely golden pastry and a hearty, satisfying filling, with chickpeas giving it a great texture. Other non-meat options include Vegetable and Brie, Woodland Mushroom and Dark Ale. Otherwise, it’s Steak with Blackbeard Stout, Chicken with Mushroom and Bacon or Mince Beef. Pies cost £15.50.

No mash dish is complete without gravy, and here, they’re made fresh daily using natural ingredients for rich, honest flavour. Take your pick from Traditional (simple sausage and veg juices), Onion (caramelised Spanish onions with vegetarian stock), Farmer’s (red wine, onion, smoked bacon and mushrooms), Liquor (classic parsley sauce), or Veggie (seasonal vegetables with tomato purée and horseradish).

Sides like caramelised onions, braised red cabbage, roasted tenderstem broccoli, or cauliflower cheese are also available. If you have room after your meal, try the sticky toffee pudding and apple crumble, all served with your choice of cream, custard, or ice cream. Drinks include beers, ciders, wines, soft drinks, and teas.

Helpful Information About Mother Mash, New Row

When we visited for lunch, the weather was warm enough to sit outside, so we took a table on the pavement with our dog. It’s a nice spot to watch the world go by, just tucked off the busier streets. The restaurant has no-nonsense, cosy decor with tiled walls and wooden furniture.
