I recently had an excellent lunch at the Maido Sushi Restaurant in St John’s Wood with a couple of friends. The sushi looked first class, but in the end, we ate Chirashi bowls, croquettes, gyozas and other tasty Japanese dishes. If you’re looking for Japanese restaurants in NW8 or places to eat lunch in St John’s Wood, you should check out Maido Sushi. If you don’t have time to dine in, they have a sizeable take-out section where you can pick up your sushi and go.

Maido Sushi Restaurant St John’s Wood Menu
Maido is famous for their quality sushi which they make using the finest ingredients. The sushi includes sashimi (salmon, scallop, tuna, yellowtail), nigiri (prawn, fatty tuna, salmon), sushi rolls (prawn tempura with avocado, black cod with teriyaki sauce) and signature rolls (fire prawn, Asian salmon).
I’m a vegetarian, so not keen on sushi myself for obvious reasons. I know it seems odd that I’d choose to eat at a sushi speciality restaurant, but the menu did offer other tempting Japanese dishes. I was hoping that one of my friends would order sushi, but they chose rice bowls instead! If you work in the vicinity, you can pick up a sushi box to take away or dine in.
I tried the vegetable gyozas to start which were perfectly cooked with a tasty filling. It got my taste buds ready for my next dish, grilled aubergine with miso. Wow, I loved the aubergine, which I find hard to cook at home, so I appreciated it more. It was succulent with a delicate miso flavour, simple yet pleasing. The pumpkin croquettes were excellent, the best I’ve ever tasted.
The boys ordered rice bowls from the donburi section. Alan had the salmon Chirashi with salmon sashimi and salmon roe with a rice base. Rich chose the crispy chicken donburi with breaded chicken fillet and karaage on a rice base with tonkatsu sauce. They were both super happy with their choice. Other donburi options included eel, teriyaki chicken and teriyaki salmon.
There were plenty of other dishes on the menu besides sushi. Traditional Japanese dishes included tuna kakuni and teriyaki chicken skewers. Hot options of duck spring rolls and octopus takoyaki were also available. Alan and I shared a couple of vegetable dishes of pak choi and steamed broccoli.
The sushi sets cost £12-22, sashimi (3 pieces) £4.5-9, nigiri (2 pieces) £4-9 and sushi rolls (6 pieces) £4-10. Donburi is £12-18, traditional Japanese dishes £5-10 and hot dishes £6-22. Drinks include sake, whisky, shochu, wine and more.
