Accompanied by two dogs, we were in search of lunch options in Elephant and Castle. Spotting outdoor seating and with the enticing offer of a set lunch at Kachori, an Indian restaurant, we sat down and suddenly felt ravenous. Kachori prides itself on being an all-day dining establishment, specialising in ingredients-focused cuisine from the North Indian regions of Rajasthan, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Delhi and across the Subcontinent. If you’re looking for Indian restaurants in Elephant and Castle, North Indian cuisine or lunch in SE17, Kachori will satisfy your taste buds.
“Kachori invites you to savour the impeccable flavours of North India at their stylish Elephant and Castle establishment,” Homegirl London.
Kachori North Indian Set Lunch Menu
The set lunch, available Monday to Friday, offers two courses for £19.50 or three courses for £24.50, accompanied by a complimentary glass of house wine, beer, or soft drink. As restaurant prices across the capital soar, I thought this was good value for money.
You can choose from small plates like matar and truffle ki kachori, salmon shikhampuri, or smoked chicken salad. I sampled the first dish, which was stunningly presented and pleasing to the palette. It was truffle-infused green peas kachori with black chickpeas, aloo and pickled ginger. My partner kept eyeing it up, so I devoured it before he could dig his fork in. Meanwhile, he was content with his Scottish salmon cakes, which had a hint of turmeric.
For the main course, options include khatte meethe baingan (baby aubergines), achari murg (spiced chicken), or the famous laal maans from Rajasthan (mutton curry). These are served with tadka dal (yellow lentil curry) and a choice of naan or onion and cumin pulao (pilaf rice).
After speaking to a staff member about other vegetarian mains, he offered a paneer dish. When our mains arrived, we noticed how beautiful they looked with the little pot of dal. We shared our dishes with the rice and naan, and both commented positively. The baby aubergines in the rich onion, tomatoes and tamarind sauce were delicious. The paneer was also an excellent dish with ample chunks of cheese. Both had rich, thick sauces.
If you have a healthy appetite, you’ll want to try their additional side dishes, such as marwari gobhi (spiced cauliflower), aloo bhaji (potato dish), or pindi chana (chickpea dish). Finally, diners can indulge in desserts like masala chai brulé with summer berries or alphonso mango with cardamom kulfi (frozen dairy dessert).
