Homegirl London pays homage to Donna Wilson. She’s synonymous with odd knitted creatures, yes you heard me right, in fact, Donna’s been making them ever since her final show at the Royal College of Art. Today, her business is built on designing and making a collection of curious cushions, luxurious lambswool blankets and a variety of home accessories which customers will treasure. Her hardworking team knit, sew, pack and send out products to individuals and design shops around the world. They use UK based manufacturers and suppliers wherever possible, doing their bit to keep craftsmanship alive. Adorable Donna was kind enough to answer a few questions about her connection with the curious …
Q. What inspired you to run with the curious pet theme?
A. Although I’ve lived in London for ten years now, most of my inspiration is from memories of my childhood growing up on a farm in Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland – the countryside has influenced my use of texture and organic forms which reminds me of home.
Q. Did you have any childhood pets and what were their names?
A. I grew up with lots of animals – my first cat was called Kitcat, then Twinky. I also had a pet lamb called Black Sheep!
Q. If you could be any animal what would you be and why?
A. I’d probably be a big fluffy cat, which curls up on people’s knees but then at night, goes out and does acrobatics!
Q. Tell me about your new collection, what can we expect?
A. Following on from the success of ceramics in 2012, I’ve added brand new Fox and Grace plates to the family, along with the bushy-tailed Squirrel and Grey Owl beakers. Baby Burt steps up to the [breakfast] plate as our new egg cup, to join Meg, Bob and Mog. There’s also a tea towel collection including the rather aptly named Handy Tea Towel!
