En route to North London for a beauty appointment, I made a point of having lunch at the Sunday Cafe and Restaurant, a hidden gem in a leafy residential neighbourhood. Its cosy and inviting atmosphere and its reputation for serving the best breakfast, brunch and lunch in London N1 piqued my curiosity. Sunday Cafe is a must-visit if you’re searching for a delightful dining experience or a charming lunch spot near Caledonian and Barnsbury station.
“Utterly charming breakfast, brunch and lunch spot. From the menu to the ingredients and presentation, everything is fabulous,” Homegirl London.
Sunday Cafe Menu
The Sunday Cafe menu is creative and delicious. From the comforting toasted banana bread with cinnamon butter to the refreshing granola with Greek yoghurt and honey, there’s something to suit every palate. The menu, which changes regularly, offers a delightful range of smaller items, all priced at a reasonable £5.50-7.50.
For savoury dishes, they offered simple eggs on toast, avocado on toast spruced up with dukkha and rocket, and mushrooms with spinach on toast accompanied by white bean puree, a poached egg, rocket, honey seeds and grated Parmesan. They also had eggs Benedict, Welsh rarebit, and a big breakfast brimming with egg, sausage, black pudding, sautéed potatoes, beans, mushrooms and toast. These cost £8.50-17.
I was particularly impressed by the courgette fritters, which were superbly presented. Strips of courgette fritters were layered on top of minted yoghurt, relish, dukkha, halloumi, avocado and a poached egg (well done on request), with rocket and sprinkles of Parmesan. It was the best version of this dish I’ve ever tasted. This cost £15.
Even though I was pretty satisfied, I couldn’t resist tasting a small portion of their pancakes. The buttermilk pancakes were incredible, served with berry compote, banana (or bacon), honeycomb butter and maple syrup. I bet the brioche French toast is just as good! Large portions are £15, while half portions are £8.
Drinks include coffee, teas, raspberry soda, orange juice, ginger kombucha, Prosecco and more.
