I’ve had the pleasure of dining at the Stoke Newington Sutton and Sons Fish and Chips Restaurant recently. Aside from the traditional fish and chips, they offer a contemporary twist with their king prawns in tempura batter, grilled scallops, snails in garlic butter and seasonal samphire. With responsibly sourced fish delivered straight from their fishmongers across the road, fish doesn’t get much fresher in North London. If you’re searching for the best fish and chips restaurant in London, places to eat in Stoke Newington or take-away food Stoke Newington then Sutton and Sons Fish and Chips Restaurant is a must.
Dozen Malden Oysters

Sutton and Sons Fish and Chips Restaurant Menu
Husband and wife team Danny and Hana Sutton set up their fishmongers on Stoke Newington High Street in 1998. Following on from their success and loyal local following it was a no brainer to open up a restaurant serving their fresh fish just across the street. Since 2010 they have offered customers deep-fried fish coated in their special batter and hand-cut chunky chips along with some more exciting dishes.
Fish Pie
Fish fans can order battered cod, haddock, plaice, coley or monkfish which you can have grilled instead if you want with the addition of trout, mackerel and haddock. Small bites include breaded whitebait, battered calamari rings, king prawns in tempura batter, smoked haddock and cod fish cakes, moules mariniere, Cromer crab on toast or a dozen Malden oysters. On the restaurant chalkboard and specials clipboard, you’ll also find a pint of prawns, jellied eels, lobster sub, tuna burger, lobster soup and fish pie. Homeboy ordered the fish pie which he said was noticeably fresh and the best he’d ever tasted which is praise indeed (he’s eaten a lot of fish pies!).
Butternut Squash and Goats Cheese Pie with Chips and Garden Peas
Pie lovers can order a steak and kidney, minced beef and onion, chicken and mushroom or butternut squash and goats cheese variant which I loved. You can enjoy your pie with mash or chips and a choice of onion gravy or liquor. Alternatively, go for a jumbo battered Cumberland or saveloy sausage. Sides include chips, which I must say are amazing and cooked to perfection, new potatoes and mash potatoes are also available. Other sides include mushy peas, garden peas, baked beans, coleslaw, curry sauce, onion gravy and seasonal salad. On the restaurant board, you’ll also see a few additional items like samphire (seasonal) and garden peas. Mrs Sutton (Hana) makes a range of pickles which include quail eggs, balsamic baby shallots and red onion rings. You can also get gherkins, pickled onions and pickled eggs if you’re in a retro mood.
Homemade Sticky Toffee Pudding With Ice Cream
If you do have room for dessert, you can try Mrs Sutton’s homemade sticky toffee pudding with ice cream which is fantastic and quite substantial in size. Alternatively, there are cakes, ice cream and sorbet. Try a deep-fried mars bar or snickers bar with ice cream if you really want to go for it. You can also order house white, rose or red wine, prosecco, champagne, beer, lager, ale, cider or soft drinks. Tea and coffee are also served. The food is to a very high standard whether you want traditional fish and chips or something a bit more exciting. With the sides, small plates, booze and desserts you could enjoy a relaxed date night at Suttons, comfort food for lunch or a fish supper with friends. If you live in the vicinity, you can order take out of having the food delivered to your door.
Sutton and Sons Fish and Chips Restaurant Interiors
I thought the interiors were spot on. With casual and vintage decor, it was a lovely place to enjoy your perfectly cooked fish and chips. Outside they have a little enclosed area with high tables and stools for the smokers and overflow when the restaurant is full.
Restaurant Interiors
Inside you’ll find the fish frying area and counter which is like a traditional fish and chip shop. The seating is sharing bench style with wooden tables, which means you might need to sit next to strangers, so do say ‘hi’ and be social. The walls are decorated with traditional style tiles and a mural of Stoke Newington, which is a nice touch. You’ll also find a few stools towards the front-facing a high counter.
