Tempting Toad Bakery Peckham Road London SE5

We popped into Café Mondo on Peckham Road for sandwiches and sat outside when I spotted the wonderful-looking pastries at Toad Bakery. Naturally, I had to investigate, so I headed over and picked up a Raspberry Custard Danish and a Yuzu Orange Jaffa Cake for dessert. If you’re looking for delicious pastries in Camberwell, independent bakeries in South London, or a sweet treat on Peckham Road, Toad Bakery is worth checking out.

If you’re passing by early in the morning, start with a classic French butter Croissant, a Chocolatine made with Haitian dark milk chocolate from Pump Street, or an Almond Croissant filled with wholemeal frangipane. There’s also an Almond Chocolatine if you fancy something extra indulgent. Other morning treats include Cardamom Buns, Saffron Teacakes and Maple Cinnamon Swirls with Cream Cheese Icing. Breakfast pastries range from £2.80 to £5.20.
For something sweet later in the day, Marzipan Sun Buns filled with custard, marzipan, and seasonal fruit are available, along with Iced Fingers and cookies. The vegan Double Choc Cookie comes sprinkled with Maldon salt, while the Soy Sauce Cookie combines white miso, tamari, chocolate chips and sesame. Sweet treats range from £2.50 to £4.80.

We couldn’t resist the Seasonal Custard Danish, which came topped with raspberries on our visit. The crisp, buttery croissant pastry, creamy vanilla custard and tart raspberries were a winning combination. We also tried the Yuzu Orange Jaffa Cake, made with orange-and-almond sponge, little domes of yuzu orange jelly, and dark chocolate ganache. It was wonderfully chocolatey with a lovely citrus kick. Both were absolutely delicious, and I’d happily go back for another helping. Our two treats cost £9–£9.50.

If you’re after something savoury, try a Cheesy Puff with Gruyère, cheddar, and garlic parsley oil; an Everything Bagel Croissant stuffed with chive cream cheese; or a Leek, Chestnut and Stilton Croissant with rosemary. Savoury pastries range from £2.50 to £5.80.

Bread lovers can choose from 100% Rye Sourdough, Malted Wheat Sourdough, Baguette, White Tin Loaf, or individual Sourdough Rolls. They also make fresh sandwiches with rotating fillings from Tuesday to Friday. Bread ranges from 80p to £5, while sandwiches cost £8.50.
