My Favourite Ten Things To Do In Highgate

  1. Explore elegant Kenwood House. This grand former stately home, situated on the edge of Hampstead Heath, is free to visit. Inside, the art collection includes works by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and Gainsborough. Outside, you’ll find landscaped gardens, lakes, ancient trees, and plenty of quiet spots for a picnic. Hampstead Lane, London NW3 7JR.

2. Admire the Parliament Hill view. One of London’s most iconic vantage points awaits at the top of Parliament Hill. From here, you can see the city skyline stretch from The Shard to Canary Wharf, especially beautiful at sunset or early morning, and there’s a real sense of space. Bring a coffee or just pause for the panorama. Hampstead Heath, London NW5 1QR.

3. Walk around Waterlow Park. This leafy park is one of Highgate’s most charming open spaces. Once gifted a “garden for the gardenless”, it features open lawns, landscaped borders, a kitchen garden and quiet corners to read or relax. It’s ideal for a slow wander or as a base for visiting Lauderdale House and the cemetery next door. Highgate Hill, London N6 5HG.

4. Tour Highgate Cemetery. With ivy-covered tombs and dramatic stone monuments, Highgate Cemetery is one of London’s most atmospheric places. It’s the final resting place of Karl Marx and other notable names. The gothic architecture and woodland paths make it feel like stepping into a different world. Book a guided tour to explore the wild West Side. I think it’s one of the best things to do in London. Swain’s Lane, London N6 6PJ.

5. Follow the Parkland Walk. This 4km stretch of greenery, following a disused railway line from Finsbury Park to Highgate and onto Muswell Hill, is now a linear nature reserve filled with wildflowers, birds, and bursts of street art. The walk is mostly flat and shady, with an overgrown, secret-world feel. I used to live at Finsbury Park, so I have walked along this route many times. There are various access points along the route.

6. Wander through Highgate Wood. An ancient woodland filled with oak and hornbeam trees, Highgate Wood is a tranquil retreat from city life. With wide paths, clearings and a café at one end. It’s perfect for a shady stroll, a morning run or a dog walk. It’s a natural time capsule that’s been there since the days of the Forest of Middlesex. Muswell Hill Road, London N10 3JN.

7. Brunch at Lauderdale House. Tucked away inside Waterlow Park, Lauderdale House is a 16th-century Tudor building transformed into an arts venue with a relaxed café. It’s perfect for brunch or a light lunch, with tables overlooking the gardens. I had avocado on sourdough toast as I overlooked the park, which was a great start to my day. Waterlow Park, Highgate Hill, London N6 5HG.
