I can’t resist popping into The Spence Bakery whenever I’m in Stoke Newington on the way to my beauty appointment. It’s become a bit of a ritual, and I usually head straight for their cheese and tomato roll. Honestly, I think it’s the best cheese and tomato roll in London! The bakery is on Church Street, not far from Clissold Park, and it’s always buzzing with locals popping in for freshly baked bread or a little treat to brighten up their working-from-home day. If you’re looking for a lovely independent bakery in Stoke Newington, delicious sandwiches in North London, or a sweet treat near Clissold Park, The Spence Bakery is well worth a visit.

The Spence Bakery Menu
My absolute favourite is the cheese and tomato roll. It sounds simple enough, but it’s absolutely delicious! The soft, squishy burger bun (they also have a seeded option) is filled with slices of cheese, juicy tomatoes and crisp lettuce that looks like Little Gem. It’s the lovely, pillowy bread that makes it extra special. Sometimes I buy two to take along to my beauty appointment, but I’ve usually eaten both before I even get there! That’s how good they are.
On my most recent visit, I also treated myself to a cinnamon swirl, which was so good! The golden pastry had a lovely swirl of cinnamon running through it. Just the sort of sweet treat I enjoy after a sandwich. I also spotted croissants, pain au chocolat and other tempting pastries on the counter. It’s difficult to resist picking up something sweet when you’re surrounded by so many goodies.
The cake selection is equally tempting. I spotted lemon drizzle cake, blueberry yoghurt cake, raspberry and white chocolate cake, and chocolate and banana cake. There were also chocolate brownies, almond friands and vegan lemon and poppyseed cake. The generously topped cakes looked particularly inviting, and I’ll certainly be tempted to try one on my next visit.
There’s plenty of freshly baked bread to choose from, too. The display includes rustic baguettes, ciabatta, oat tin loaves and Wildfarmed white tin loaves. They also sell white and wholemeal sourdough, malted barley, multigrain and muesli varieties. The shelves were full of lovely-looking loaves, making it a great place to pick up bread for home. And this is just a small selection of what The Spence Bakery makes, with plenty more goodies to discover on each visit.
