I suggested my partner book lunch at Hutong in The Shard for a special birthday celebration. I had intended to visit earlier, but the pandemic intervened, forcing me to cancel. No matter, I finally made it! I’ve dined in this iconic building before, and enjoying those breathtaking views is always a treat. If you’re looking for the best Chinese food in London or restaurants with a view, I highly recommend Hutong at The Shard, London.
“Hutong was definitely worth the wait. The Northern Chinese vegetarian/vegan set menu was beautifully balanced, bursting with bold flavours and delicate textures, all enjoyed alongside incredible views of London- truly a special birthday lunch,” Homegirl London.
Vegetarian/Vegan Set Lunch At Hutong
We initially intended to order from their Northern Chinese à la carte menu, but I noticed that Hutong had a dedicated vegetarian/vegan menu called Jasmine. As I scanned the options, I realised they reflected my top picks from the main menu, so I decided to go for it. It turned out to be an excellent choice.
Our meal started with a small bowl of spicy pepper and Chinese leek soup. The flavours were warming and well-balanced, although I could have done without the tofu slivers.
Next, the sliced lotus root arrived in orange sauce. It was a visually striking dish and one of my favourites. The citrus notes provided a refreshing lift to the lotus root’s natural crispness.
Another highlight was the vegetarian spring rolls stuffed with mushrooms and cabbage. I particularly appreciated their presentation, cut at an angle for a sophisticated touch.
They were served alongside pan-seared corn and mushroom crystal dumplings, wrapped in delicate, translucent skins that delivered a rich umami burst.
For the main course, we enjoyed wok-tossed lotus root with Chinese pickled vegetables and pine nuts, a memorable mix of crunch, tang and nuttiness.
We swapped the mapo tofu with chilli sauce for the Sichuan-style aubergine tempura, which was an excellent decision. The light, crispy batter covered silky aubergine, all enveloped in a sauce that beautifully enhanced its flavours.
The fried noodles with seasonal vegetables were incredibly tasty.
For our greens, we enjoyed wok-fried pea shoots that were fresh, vibrant, and full of flavour.
Before my dessert, they brought me a little birthday surprise of a red bean dessert dumpling with a candle. It was a nice touch.
We ended on a sweet note with a chocolate tart. It was rich and satisfying; however, I would have preferred something Chinese-flavoured. I noticed that other set menus included mandarin sorbet. Never mind, it was a good chocolate tart.
The Jasmine set menu offers a well-balanced journey through flavours and textures, blending spice, freshness, and indulgence. At £75 per person, I found it to be good value given the high-quality ingredients. They also provide a selection of meaty set menus, or you can choose from the à la carte menu. Additionally, check out the drink selection, which includes some fabulous cocktails!
