Charming coastal home accessories trend sails calmly ahead

Being surrounded by sea it’s no wonder that so many British designers are celebrating coastal living.  The nautical look has been a big hit this year, but I feel it’s now sailing towards the charms of calmer coastal home accessories.  I’m going to be showcasing five design companies, who are adorning everything from tableware to home furnishings with coastal cottages, lighthouses, boats, fish, crabs and seagulls.  Their designs feature on mugs, jugs, tea towels, cushions and even wallpaper.  Let’s take a look at the coastal home accessories from Cream Cornwall, Julia Davy, Louise Brainwood, Rustic Country Crafts and Jessica Hogarth.

Coastal Home Accessories Inspired by Cornwall

Cream Cornwall is the collaboration between Rebecca Heane and Allison Hughes.  As the name implies their home accessories pay tribute to Cornwall and all the imagery and memories this special place evokes.  Their striking indigo illustrations of mackerel, scallop shells, sailing boats and anchors adorn plates, mugs, tea towels, aprons, lampshades, cushions and prints.

Cornwall is also featured by ceramicist Julia Davey on tableware.  Her collection of fine bone china mugs, jugs, sugar pots and butter dishes is called Cornish Coast.  You’ll notice lighthouses, fishing boats and rock pools adorning her wares, all inspired by the coastline of Penwith.  Everything is hand-painted by Julia for an individual and quality finish.

Here’s another designer featuring Cornwall and the fishing port of Newlyn.  Louise Brainwood was inspired by the crates of freshly caught mackerel on the Harbourside.  This design has been applied to lampshades, cushions and doorstops.

More Coastal Home Accessories

Rustic Country Crafts make unique cushions from their studio in Northern Ireland on the Shore of Lough Neagh.  It’s no wonder that they’re partial to coastal silhouettes of lighthouses, seagulls and crabs.  They use local Irish linen and hessian for their textiles which are sourced from mills close to their workshop.

Jessica Hogarth makes colourful illustrative prints, tea towels, contemporary greeting cards and cushions featuring harbours, idyllic coastal towns and fishing in her work.  Her colour palettes and linear drawings have a slight fifties feel which adds to the charm of her collection.  Her Coastal Cottages design is the most recognisable which showcases the buildings of Robin Hood’s Bay.
