Cornish based furniture designer Lucy Turner is known for her customisation of mid century side boards with funky laser cut Formica patterns.  Lucy’s latest creations see her making a foray into the contemporary furniture arena with her colourful take on the drinks cabinet which is just perfect for housing all your cocktail paraphernalia at home.  She’s made two vibrant designs – Birds of Paradise and Foxglove.  These would also work as a small storage cabinet located anywhere in your home where you could do with a splash of colour.  I saw Lucy at this year’s 100% Design exhibition and admired these pieces up close and believe me they are fabulous.  Let’s take a look at the drinks cabinet designs.

Drinks Cabinet – view the designs

This Birds of Paradise cabinet displays the deliciously exotic flower of the same name on the front panels.  It depicts the beautiful upright orange sepals, vivid blue petals along with the nectary base of the flower.  When you open the doors you’ll be delighted to find a bright blue interior.

The Foxglove cabinet captures the interesting shape of the tubular bell shaped flowers which are often described as fingers of a glove.  These flowers come in an array of colours and Lucy has chosen to decorate her piece with vibrant pinks and oranges.  Inside you’ve find the interior comes in a bright clementine.

These motifs have been designed by Lucy, cut out, etched and then hand inlayed using Formica.  Lucy calls this technique ‘modern marquetry’ which is a process she’s been perfecting since 2005 so she’s now extremely good at it!

Drinks Cabinet – product details

Both pieces have been crafted from solid ash and birch ply by a local crafts person who is an expert cabinet maker.  The pattern has then been layered by Lucy using a Formica laminate.  Because of the Formica material, the designs will not fade and they are extremely easy to keep clean with just a wipe from a damp cloth.  The top of the cabinet can be used to mix up your drinks which won’t mark the surface.  The doors open and shut with the aid of push catches so there are no handles to distract from the design.  Inside you’ll find two shelves which you can adjust to suit the contents.  It’s a nice compact size which is designed to give a room colour without being too dominating.  The measurements are 120cm high, 64cm wide and 35cm deep – £2750-2950.  These pieces have been made in England.
