Irene Bakery, Denmark Hill, Camberwell, London SE5, is a must-visit Artisanal Bakery and a Boutique Wine Shop. I’ve eaten there several times and will definitely return for more. I can’t get enough of their Pain au Chocolates, Danish Pastries, Sourdough Sandwiches and delicious Cakes. They also sell sustainable, organic and biodynamic Wine by the bottle to take home, or you may like to sip a glass on the premises. If you’re looking for the best Bakeries in South East London, Cafes in Camberwell or places to meet a friend in SE5, you’ll be thankful you choose the Irene Bakery.
“Exceptional in-house made Croissants, Cakes and Sourdough Bread and a carefully curated Wine collection make this Artisanal Bakery a must-visit Cafe in Camberwell,” Homegirl London.
Irene Bakery Menu
Start your morning with a Plain Croissant, Almond Croissant, Pain au Chocolate, Pain au Coconut or Pain au Raisin. I can vouch for the Pain au Chocolate with flaky layers of Pastry and delicious Dark Chocolate inside.
The Danish selection is irresistible with Raspberry and Custard or Peach with Frangipane. They also sell Cinnamon Buns, happy days! I sampled the Apple Frangipane; every mouthful was pure bliss.
Sandwiches made with their in-house baked bread include Mozzarella with Pesto and Tomato, BLT, Chorizo or a Vegan Hummus and Roasted Pepper, which I loved.
You may want to take one of the Plain, Spelt and Seeds or Wholemeal Sourdough Loaves home with you. Traditional Baguettes, Olive Bread and Ciabatta, are also available.
In the afternoon, you’ll definitely be tempted by one of the Cakes. Deciding between the Guinness, Spiced Apple and Walnut, or Raspberry and Almond Polenta Cakes is challenging. If you want a Vegan treat try the Brownies. They will also have a Basque Cheesecake, which I must say looked amazing.
The Wines take centre stage here with a carefully curated collection from producers that respect nature and represent the place they are from. These are mainly French and Italian, with some Spanish and Austrian, including established low-intervention wine producers and lesser-known others. For special occasions, check out the Champagne from small growers. You can drink a glass of Vino or take a bottle home.
Beverages include a selection of Coffees by The Gentlemen Baristas, Brew Tea Co. Teas and a few Soft Drinks.
To give you an idea of prices, Croissants are £2.70-3.90, while Danishes are £3.90. Sandwiches cost £5.60-5.90. A loaf of Sourdough Bread is £4.40-4.60. Cakes and Brownies are £2.50-4.90. Either eat in, take out, or get a home delivery via Deliveroo.
