We didn’t want to go too far for lunch, so we went around the corner to Baccalà, a seafood and wine restaurant on Bermondsey Street, London SE1. Because we often travel further afield to review London restaurants, we’d never eaten at Baccalà before. After dining there, I regret not visiting earlier, especially for their exquisite tiramisu. If you’re looking for Italian restaurants on Bermondsey Street, a set lunch menu near London Bridge or seafood in SE1, you’ll love the Baccalà restaurant.
“Indulge in the perfect pairing of seafood and wine at Baccalà, a charming contemporary Italian eatery on beautiful Bermondsey Street, which transports you to a vacation mode even on a rainy London day,” Homegirl London.
Spring Set Lunch Menu At Baccalà
We took advantage of their new Spring set lunch menu; the weekday deal is £32 per person for three courses. The choice may be limited, but it’s quality. We shared two starters of burrata e pappa al pomodoro, a creamy burrata served with Tuscan tomato bread sauce, which was delicious.
It paired perfectly with the mushroom and pumpkin bruschetta with blue cheese and hazelnut. Thankfully, the blue cheese was not overpowering, as it’s not among my favourites. The other option is grilled sardines served with crisp puntarelle (chicory).
Onto the mains. My partner opted for the chitarrine (similar to spaghetti but with square edges) and mussels carbonara, a handmade pasta dish with fresh Cornish mussels. It looked appealing, with a slight seafood aroma wafting from the plate.
Meanwhile, I was pleased with my farfalle, friarielli, ricotta, a pasta with vibrant friarielli greens and cacioricotta (Southern Italian cheese). The gorgeous green colour made this dish extra appealing.
We were both looking forward to the only dessert available, the tiramisu, and I can say it’s probably one of the best I’ve ever tasted—and I’ve eaten a lot!! The consistency was spot on, creamy and velvety, a real melt-in-the-mouth and sent-to-heaven experience. I wanted another but reigned myself in. After the meal, I felt satisfyingly full, so every course seemed to be the perfect portion size.
You can also choose dishes from the regular menu, including oysters, whipped salted cod, roasted octopus, black baby squid, fennel salad and artisanal cheeses. Ensure you peruse the wine list, which takes you on an Italian journey of discovery from small artisan producers who practice sustainable agriculture with low or zero-intervention.
