Restaurant Review: Loyal Tavern. Previously Village East, the new menu delivers flatbread with parsnip hummus, spiced lamb skewers and blackened cauliflower to the food lovers living near Bermondsey Street. If you’re looking for the best weekend brunch in Bermondsey, restaurants near London Bridge or places to eat on Bermondsey Street, you must book a table at the Loyal Tavern.
“Tuck into a seasonal menu featuring British produce in this Bermondsey Street eatery which serves tasty brunches, small plates and late suppers to loyal locals,” Homegirl London
Previously Village East, the Loyal Tavern has rebranded and now has Tom Cenci (former Duck and Waffle Executive Chef) at the helm. This restaurant is part of the House Café Company group which includes The Riding House Café and Rail House Café. The interiors are the same, but the menu is new. Lucky for me, this restaurant is around the corner from my apartment so I will return to try the lunch and dinner very soon.
Loyal Tavern Weekend Brunch Menu
Homeboy and I visited this establishment for brunch last Saturday and loved it. We selected brunch items from the All-Day Menu which featured some delightful dishes. Egg options included Smoked Salmon Scrambled Eggs, Avocado Benedict, Oak Smoked Salmon Royale or Eggs Any Style on Farmhouse Toast. They also have a Brioche Breakfast Bap filled with Fried Egg, Smoked Salmon, Coriander and Chilli Jam. We shared the Avocado with Peperonata (Stewed Peppers) and Poached Eggs on Farmhouse Toast, which was small but noticeably nice.

For larger dishes with eggs try the Campfire Breakfast comprising of Slow Cooked Pork Shoulder, BBQ Baked Beans, and Fried Egg. We shared the Loyal Veggie Breakfast which was very good indeed. This included Grilled Halloumi, sweet-tasting Piquillo Peppers, Kale, Breakfast Potatoes (those were amazing), Fried Eggs (well done as requested), Field Mushroom, Cherry Tomatoes, and Toast. They offer a meaty version of this with Bacon Chop, Lincolnshire Sausage, Fresh Black Pudding, Fried Egg and Beef Dripping Toast. You can add sides to any dish from an extensive list.

There are a couple of sweet options on the menu. Buttermilk Pancakes come with Berries, yummy Chantilly Cream and a lashing of Maple Syrup. We divided up the Eggy Bread with Caramelised Banana and a scoop of Caramel Ice Cream which was excellent, one of the nicest versions of Eggy Bread I’ve ever tasted. Pity I had to share it!
To give you the idea of price points the Meat Breakfast is £12, the Veggie Breakfast £11, Eggy Bread £9 and Pancakes £9.50. I thought the prices were very reasonable considering the interiors, location and premium ingredients. From 12 noon you can order items from another section of the menu such as Charred Mackerel, Buttermilk Poached Cod, Mac Burger and more. The Bottomless Brunch is £39 per head at the weekend. Drinks include a long list of Cocktails, House Seasonal Kombucha, Raspberry Soda and Smoked Lemonade. Beer, Cider, and Wine are also available as is tea and coffee.
Loyal Tavern Bermondsey Street Interiors
The interiors are quite spacious with an industrial vibe. The wooden floors are wonderful as is the large bar. There are a few booths designed for two people. We sat towards the back of the restaurant and those tables were a little close together. You’ll find a lot of distressed metal sheeting and wood inside. It’s a stylish place to pop into for weekend brunch, lunch or a late supper.
