Pointing Hand Home Accessories Trend

Homegirl London spots the pointing hand home accessories trend. Vintage pointing fingers are everywhere you look. Perhaps you noticed the giant pointing finger on The Shed which is a red wooden built structure by the National Theatre at the South Bank. It seemed that everyone walking past just couldn’t help but get a picture of themselves underneath the finger. With our love of retro designs, it’s no wonder that pointing hand home accessories are here to stay. I’m going to point out (ha, get it) of my favourite discoveries which include wall art prints, wall stickers, marquee lights, candle holders and cushions.

According to Wikipedia, the pointing hand illustration was historically used to show punctuation in manuscripts or where corrections were required. This symbol was called by many names – index, manicule, fist, printer’s fist, bishop’s fist, digit, mutton-fist, hand director, pointer and pointing hand. It was later used as a bullet-like symbol to highlight important text, to cross-reference information in encyclopedias, to inform readers that they should turn the page and of course showing you which way you should walk. This wonderful illustration continues to be a distinctive typographic icon which adorns plenty of home accessories.
