As you know, I’m a vegetarian, and my partner (Homeboy) eats fish. When I was invited to check out Rudie’s I was curious to see if they catered for veggies and they did! I was only too pleased to hop on a bus and get myself down to Boxpark to savour the delights of their Jamaican cuisine.
Popular Jamaican Drinks
By chance, we bumped into our friends Kate and Duncan, who have an office across the road. They decided to pick up one of Rudie’s takeaway boxes containing Jerk Chicken with Rice and Peas. There was also a Yardi Box with Curry Goat available which is very popular. Meat at Rudie’s is marinated for a minimum of 24 hours. They use traditional jerk drums for cooking with coal rather than gas and add wood chips for a smoky flavour. The meat here is as good as it gets without having to fly to the Caribbean.

I ordered the Jah Love Box, which is their vegan offering. This was a sizable selection of ackee and sweet peppers along with callaloo, plantain plus rice and peas. If you’re not familiar with Ackee, it’s a fruit which is eaten as a vegetable and Callaloo is rather like spinach. This dish was delicious and would certainly fill you up, so you’re ready to get back to your desk and work away for the rest of the day (yeah right!).

The Mushroom and Callaloo Roti Wrap were fantastic. The chef, Pierre Frenchie, told me that he had mixed up ingredients like chickpeas, red peppers, gherkins and spring onions with mayo which he layers inside to give the wrap more taste. It was perfect, with a good heat-kick and a little crunch! Jerk Chicken, Jerk Pork and a Curry Goat Roti Wrap are also available.

Homeboy tried the Peppered Prawns which were fiery, so he was pleased to have his can of Ting to hand. They also had Calamari, and if you’re a fan of squid, perhaps you’d like to try this instead. If you love burgers try the double beef Boss, Jerk Chicken or Jerk Halloumi versions.

We couldn’t resist ordering the Sweet Potato Fries, which were very good. The manager, Federico, gave us three dips to try; Spicy, Jerk Ketchup and Spicy Mayo where were great for dunking our fries in. Be warned that the Spicy dip is very hot. Other sides include Rice and Peas, Fried Plantain and Slaw.

To give you an idea about prices, the Box options are £9.50, Burgers £7.50-10 and Roti Wraps £6.50. Drinks include Ting, Ginger Beer, Blackwell Rum Punch and Red Stripe Beer. Perhaps keep the Rum Punch to after work if you don’t want to get fired!

Restaurant Interior
Rudie’s Shoreditch is housed inside a shipping container. The place isn’t very large, but it is vibrant with bright posters on the walls and a stack of sound system speakers towards the back. With an open kitchen, you can see the chef in action. You can either sit inside or on one of the benches directly in front of their container.
