Rume transforms rooms with exceptional home furnishings online

Shop spotlight on Rume. This home emporium store is located in Hove (UK) with a very good online offering. I’ll be concentrating on the website for those not lucky enough to be able to visit this establishment in person. They sell a mix of home furnishings online. From a fabulous collection of made to order furniture, particularly sumptuous sofas and handsome armchairs, to heaps of homeware goodies. You’ll also find a tempting mix of contemporary lighting, home accessories, decorative accessories and kitchenware. They aim to bring a flash of colour and fun to your space so it’s a home you can love. I caught up with the owners to find out more about Rume.

Meet the Rume Owners

Rume is owned by Richard and Libby Baker. Richard is the creative director, and Libby lets Richard think he is the boss – that’s their words, not mine! They met at the Sydney Theatre Company in Australia. Richard was a props maker and actor, Libby was an office administrator and dancer. The rest, as they say, is history! Libby tells me how the business started, “we returned to England and Richard’s father, a furniture designer and maker, wanted a shop. So Richard set it up and ran it for him. When his dad retired, we took over, and Rume was born.” As for the shop and business name, they reveal, “it’s an old English word that means airy, open and to a high degree, the precursor to a room but in the spacious, not the enclosed sense. It also looks interesting, sounds intriguing and is a four-letter domain name that was available. How lucky was that?”

They explain their decision also to become an online retailer, “we started the shop as a physical entity selling only our bespoke furniture. We quickly realised that the internet would work well as a catalogue. It was far better than having to produce brochures and also environmentally friendly constantly. The online store was a natural extension of that, and we continue to extend our product range by adding new pieces almost daily.”

Rume Collection

Libby and Richard want to bring a sense of style and joy to our homes. They comment, “in a monochrome world, we are a sorely needed flash of colour. We are the scarlet lining of a well-cut jacket, the heart engraved on the back of a silver watch case, the happy thought behind a secret smile. We believe interiors should be not only sophisticated but also fun. We don’t want to live in a boutique hotel; we’d rather live in a real home.”

They sell their range of made to order furniture which is designed in-house by Richard and made in the UK. Richard tells me, “our furniture may be timeless in design and resolutely English, but our sensibility is about as far from fusty as it is possible to get.”  You’ll find a collection of dining room tables and chairs plus cabinets.

The seating selection is sizable with sofas, corner sofas, armchairs and ottomans. These include contemporary updates on classics like chesterfields as in their Smithfield model along with the chunky and curvaceous Thunderbird. These are all handmade to order in the Sussex workshop.  Richard explains, “we only use skilled craftspeople with a passion for traditional furniture techniques which we combine with modern materials. The good news for our clients is that they get to choose their dream specification from the dimensions to the fabric and right through to the stains applied to the leg timber. Our sofas are investment pieces attracting a certain client who is looking for something beautiful, which is designed to last and not fall apart.”

As for the home accessories, Libby tells me, “over the years we’ve developed a unique look that complements our truly fantastic furniture with a riot of wonderful products from all over the world.” Their designer brands include Flos, Artemide, Tom Dixon, Gubi, Santa and Cole, Slamp, Vitamin, Normann Copenhagen, Timorous Beastie, Areaware, Metalhouse and countless others. They also support a host of emerging brands like The New English, Martha Mitchell, Bang Bang Kid, Rory Dobner, Dupenny and more. To give you an idea of what you’ll find online, Libby and Richard recommend the Santa and Cole Lampshades (GT5, GT6 and GT7) which come in some lovely colours. The discreet white disk hides the bulb and diffuses the light. It’s suspended from a unique pivot point on the cable to achieve a perfect horizontal line. You’ll also need to purchase a special cable and rose to go with this piece. The light measurements vary depending on the model – £260-770.

Also, from their extensive contemporary lighting collection is the Vitamin Knot Lamp which is made from hand-blown glass. The shade is supported by a monkey fist knot which is available in six colours – grey, blue, green, red, orange and yellow. The diffuser is 22.4cm high and 19.5cm wide – £165 and also 22.4cm high by 14cm wide – £130. They have plenty more lights available ranging from ceiling pendants to desk lamps, floor lamps and wall lights.

The cushion collection is quite extensive full of bright colours and patterns. They even have some custom made cotton linen cushions which come in eight colours. These feature an excellent pie crust edge and come with a duck feather core for complete comfort. The measurements are 56cm high and 46cm wide – £59.00.

The selection of toys is quite impressive. These are not just for children, and adults can display and enjoy them too as decorative objects. For example, these Cowboy and (Native American) Indian figurines are inspired by those miniature plastic toys we used to play within our childhood. These are enlarged versions which have been designed by Bang Bang Kid Studio. Available in bright colours – purple, yellow, green, orange, pink, turquoise plus more. The height is approximately 48cm – £110.

Areaware Wooden Animals are something interesting to admire when you have a spare moment. The hardwood frames can actually be changed into different poses thanks to the elastic band muscles in the limbs. These are very durable so you’ll have endless fun creating new poses. Each animal comes in a large and small size – £65 – £185.

Other toys include a range of robots in bright colours, which I love. There are also some adorable knitted creatures by Danish brand Luckyboysunday. You can also pick up a hand puppet in numerous designs like a cow or panda!
