Homegirl London finds rustic Christmas decorations. With Christmas fast approaching it’s time to start thinking about decorating your home. This isn’t compulsory so don’t feel you have to join in. I’ve selected some tasteful rustic Christmas decorations which aren’t overly festive and can be displayed all year round. A decorative stag head, metal star, tree branch candle holder or hurricane lantern are good alternatives for those who aren’t fans of overly cheery chintz.
Rustic Decorations for Christmas and Beyond
Rustic Christmas decorations – my selection
Stag trophy heads have been popular for a couple of years now. They are a great way to inject some mountain lodge chic into a room. The Wooden Deer Head Wall Trophy is constructed from interlocking birch plywood which you can leave in its natural state or paint and then distress for a shabby chic finish. You can hang it on your wall with just one screw so it’s real easy. Decorate with a sprig of mistletoe for Christmas. The measurements are 76 x 58 x 34cm – £140 from Clive Roddy at notonthehighstreet.com.

If you’d prefer not to fix anything to your wall then the Wooden Stags Head Christmas Decoration might appeal. This is made from ply wood and has been painted with a creamy white wash allowing the wood grain to show through. It’s finished with a red satin bow and metal painted bell for a Christmas feel. If you want to keep this decoration hung all year round you can just change the bow for something more neutral instead. This looks great hung on its own or in a group. The measurements are 17 x 14 x 1cm – £5.95 from My Baboo at notonthehighstreet.com.
Wooden Stags Head
From stags to stars … I just love this Amish Metal Barn Star which has been handmade by Amish communities in America using traditional techniques. It has been constructed from reclaimed tin which has been salvaged from disused farm buildings. These are available in white, red, pink, blue and green colours and come in three sizes – £37-99 from The Original Home Store at notonthehighstreet.com.

I also like the Beech Wood Star which you can turn into a rounded shaped Christmas tree by re-shaping the structure. It has been made in France and measures 118cm when it is a star and 158cm tall when it is a tree – £72 from Cachette.

Candles are always a nice touch for the festive season. This handmade wood Branch Candle Holder has room for twelve tea lights. It is perfect for placing on your mantelpiece or in the centre of your dining table. If you don’t have a real fire, then this log candle might be a good alternative – £15.91 from Forest Inspiration at Etsy UK.

Invest in candle holders which are rustic and homely rather than obviously just for Christmas. I like the Iridescent Glass Hurricane Lanterns featuring mottled glass finished with a rope style carrying handle. You can place these outside on your door step to greet guests arriving for your party. They come in small and large sizes – £22-34 from Primrose and Plum at Etsy UK.

Rustic Christmas decorations – make your own
Some of the pieces I’ve selected might give you some Christmas decoration ideas to make yourself. For example, if you know anyone who chops their own fire wood perhaps they could give you some off cuts which you can place tea lights on top. Garden twine and burlap (hessian) are ideal materials for achieving that shabby chic come rustic look. Wrap some around a couple of disused glass jam jars to make candle holders. Bolster wood is cheap and easy to cut with a Stanley knife which you can use to make a star shape and hang it up with red satin ribbon.
Rustic Christmas decorations – where to buy
If you don’t have the time or the inclination to make any decorations yourself, you can just buy the ones I’ve selected from the following retailers. Remember – a decoration doesn’t just have to be for Christmas, it can be for all year round!
