I was invited to attend the opening of the new Clarissa Hulse shop. I love her work and as it was close by my home I made the effort to take myself along there and was so glad I did. It’s such a wonderful space which is attached to her workshop in Islington and the perfect environment to show off her amazing wares; cushions, lampshades, bed linen, towels, throws, scarves, fabrics, wallpaper and lots of lovely gifts; wash bags, silk purses and hand printed notelets.
If you’re not familiar with Clarissa’s work then you’re missing out because she really is the textile queen – producing delightful home accessories in rich, exciting colour combinations. Her wares often incorporate patterns inspired by her love for nature. Her work has a broad appeal – from Shoreditch to the Shires! Customers are likely to be design aware and want something a bit different but not too crazy. To give you an idea of what you can find to buy, Clarissa has recommend four of her favourite pieces …
Gifts available from the Clarissa Hulse shop:
Rue Patchwork Silk Cushion 30cm x 50cm Antique Gold Linen Magenta, £59
Angelica Silk Cushion Antique Gold Linen Magenta Vintage Gold, £79
Peacock Gold Mimosa 100% Wool Scarf, £95
Clarissa had been thinking about opening up her own shop for a while now – “I’ve been wholesaling and making license interior accessories for years and really wanted to have a place where I could showcase everything together and create my own vision of loveliness.” Well, she’s certainly achieved that. The displays are fabulous; there is a bed which shows off the bed linen. Clarissa’s childhood trunk has cushions spilling out of it. There is a giant cushion wall in the hallway displaying the array of colours and patterns available. This visual feast is all designed to inspire customers to be brave with colour in their home.

The space itself was built in the 1930s as a garage for the grand houses in Highbury Fields. It has an industrial feel with neutral colours so that the colourful accessories can sing out loud and proud. Because everything is printed in the studio, which is at the back of the shop, they can offer to make cushions in different sizes and colours. They even print fabrics for curtains in bespoke colours to match your living room perfectly.
The shop is located at 29 Corsica Street, London N5 1JT which is very close to the Highbury & Islington station. It’s open Monday through to Saturday 10am to 6pm. For further information take a look at the website Clarissa Hulse.
