SCP was established in 1985 by Sheridan Coakley – the name SCP simply stands for Sheridan Coakley Products. Sheridan set up shop in Shoreditch because he loved the architecture of the old derelict warehouses; the area was once a thriving furniture making district back in the 19th and 20th centuries. By the 80’s, Shoreditch was rundown and deserted but Sheridan managed to see through this. In 1985 he bought the SCP East store, a former furniture manufacturing storeroom. After a number of years of dealing in 20th century furniture in Notting Hill, Sheridan started to manufacture tubular steel furniture, inspired by the designs of the Modern Movement. He decided to start selling classic and hard to find pieces and also try his hand at producing new designs in the same spirit. He’s been credited with launching the careers of design luminaries such as Matthew Hilton, Konstantin Grcic and Jasper Morrison.
The store is presented in the context of a living space using a mix of own brand furniture and a selection of interesting accessories from established and emerging designers. Sheridan and Retail buyer, Paul Huggins source new products from trade shows and exhibitions all over the world. They strive to present customers with new and interesting pieces whilst continue to stock classic items which have sold exceptionally well over the years. Sheridan says his store is frequented by a range of consumers with one thing in common – they appreciate good quality, innovative and design led products. Nearly three decades on and SCP remains true to its founding idea – to make and sell design products that are functional, beautiful and made to last. Sheridan says the best thing about owning a shop is getting to meet people who buy their designs.
