Restaurant Review: The School House Jerwood Space. Homeboy and I have eaten at the cafe inside the Jerwood Space a few times recently. They offer good quality breakfast and lunch with excellent coffee at reasonable prices. If you’re looking for cafes on Union Street, coffee houses in SE1 or places to eat lunch in Southwark, check out The School House Jerwood Space.
“With excellent coffee, tasty sandwiches, healthy salads and hot food options, The School House, at the Jerwood Space, is the perfect place to relax and hang out with creative people,” Homegirl London
The School House Jerwood Space Coffee and Food Menu
This establishment is run by The Gentlemen Baristas who have a few London coffee houses – Store Street, Park Street, 63 Union Street and further along the same road at 171 Union Street inside the Jerwood Space (rehearsal rooms). We’ve visited a few times recently and found the coffee to be very good, so that gets the big thumbs up. Matcha latte, turmeric latte and teas by Chash are also available.
The food is also delicious and just what one wants to eat for breakfast, mid-morning or at lunchtime. Start your day with sourdough toast and a spread of fig and almond jam or house peanut butter. Or you can be virtuous with fresh and stewed fruit, granola and spiced yoghurt.
Avocado on Toast
Hot dishes include poached eggs on sourdough to which you can add your sides – smoked streaky bacon, proper chorizo, smoked salmon, smashed avocado or grilled halloumi. Or you can choose mushrooms on toast with parmesan and Manchego cheese. The avocado on toast is pimped with sumac, dukkha and herbs to which you can add an egg if you want. We’ve sampled the avocado on toast, and it’s delicious.
We’ve also tried The Feast, which is great to share because it’s quite sizeable. You get a wooden board topped with halloumi, smashed avocado, house chilli jam, cherry tomatoes and sourdough. It was a welcome treat at lunchtime, after a busy morning blogging! The popular Middle Eastern Shakshuka dish (eggs baked in spiced tomato sauce) is also available.
The salad bowls are perfect if you’re on a healthy mission. You can ask for a mix of what’s available at the counter. Add halloumi and hummus if you want to make it more substantial.
Share a salad with your work colleague or partner, and you can go halves on a sandwich. They have various options in wraps (chicken, hummus, harissa, lettuce and cucumber), focaccia (mozzarella, tomato, pesto and basil leaves) or sourdough bread (truffle mushroom melt).
To give you the idea of price points Avocado on Toast is £6.50, The Feast is £11, Wraps are £5, sandwiches are £4.50, and a medium salad bowl is £4.95. Cakes and pastries are also available if you need a sugar hit.
The School House Jerwood Space Interiors
Order your food at the counter where you can see the menu on display. Within this area, you will see a collection of tables and chairs. Next to this is a glass structure with more seating. We like to sit in this part because it has plants which make the place feel tranquil. You can see a water feature through the glass windows. If it is a pleasant day, you might want to sit outside in the courtyard.
