Our friend Molly was visiting London so we arranged to meet at the Kupp restaurant (spelt KuPP), Merchant Square in Paddington. This is a Scandinavian all day casual dining eatery, coffee shop and bar. It’s very spacious and is located beside the canal so is a great place to hang out. If you’re searching for the best places to eat near Paddington, coffee bars in Merchant Square or London Scandinavian restaurants pop in to the Kupp restaurant.

Kupp Restaurant Menu
The menu has a focus on Scandinavian and British ingredients. We were there for breakfast which you can start the Swedish way with Fika, which means ‘to have coffee’ often with a pastry. The coffee here was very good and is ethically sourced by The Coffee Hunters at Mercanta which is currently Fazenda Passeio 100% Mondo Novo from Brazil. Cinnamon lovers can order a cinnamon Danish, cinnamon and apple roll or cinnamon with walnut and raisin roll to go with their coffee. Otherwise it’s custard and raisin braid, apple turnover or almond croissant.
If you want the Scandinavian experience order the breakfast bord (yes, that’s spelt bord rather than board). This is quite spectacular with Hansen and Lydersen smoked salmon, smoked Sussex ham, Vasterbotton cheese, seasonal citrus, Sussex churned butter, toasted breads, Leksands Knacke crispbread and lingonberry jam. Molly ordered this dish and commented on how succulent the smoked salmon and ham tasted. She didn’t quite finish the bord because it was massive but Homeboy kindly polished off the rest of the toasted bread for her, he’s so helpful … when it comes to finishing left over food!
I ordered the spicy poached egg which was very good. The poached eggs are served in natural yoghurt with fresh chives and spiced butter which had a nice chilli kick to it. With a side of toasted sourdough, I spread the left over natural yoghurt on top and devoured the lot. I also tried the watermelon and mint juice which was super healthy and they had a few other concoctions which sounded tempting.
Spicy Poached Egg
Homeboy sampled the smoked trout which was served on top of sourdough toast with crushed avocado dressed with pea shoots and a side of lemon which he squeezed over the top. This was a very tasty dish for breakfast. If you are in the mood for something sweet, you could try the cardamom sugar Swedish pancakes or the toasted banana bread with cinnamon ricotta and blossom honey. Apple and cinnamon Bircher muesli and Wessex mill porridge were also available.
Home Smoked Trout with Crushed Avocado on Sourdough
The all day menu features lots of healthy salads with smoked trout, chicken, vegan or veggie options. Open sandwiches with various ingredients were featured like smoked streaky Danish bacon, heirloom tomatoes, soft boiled eggs and pickled cucumber. Or you can order a hot sandwich with house smoked meatballs, smoked ham with melted cheese or wild mushrooms with wilted spinach and poached egg. Then you have the sharing options of small plates like potted rabbit, chorizo sausage roll or goats curd with beets. Big dishes are oven roast venison loin, steaks, burgers and more.
Kupp Restaurant Interiors
This restaurant, bar and coffee shop is located at Paddington Basin in Merchant Square which is an eleven-acre estate. Here you will find many businesses, residential apartments and leisure facilities. This restaurant occupies the ground floor of a high rise modern building and therefore benefits from floor to ceiling glazing. There is space on the canal side for seating so it’s a nice spot to hang out on a sunny day.
Inside, the space is airy and bright with light flooding in from those magnificent windows. Through the doors and you have the take-out coffee bar to the side. Walk towards the main restaurant and you find the bar faced with high tables and chairs. Through to the dining space which is very roomy. The décor is industrial with bare brick walls, polished concrete floor and exposed pipes. It’s a lovely place to hang out with friends for a leisurely breakfast, lunch or evening meal where you can share some delicious food and try their long list of premium drinks.
