Indish Design Shop is a cool little design shop located in Crouch End. It was set up in 1996 by Kasha Dalal and Melanie Silgardo who were previously editors in publishing. They sell a lovely mix of modern European Design alongside emerging British. The type of designers featured include; Marimekko, littala, Normann Copenhagen, Muuto, Flos, Kartell, Donna Wilson, And Then Design, Another Country, Reiko Kaneko and Thelermont Hupton.
As you might expect from the designer products they stock, their motto is “good design lasts longer.” They’ve been instrumental in bringing good design to the area for 15 years now and changing how some people actually view design. They told me – “When we first started selling contemporary design people thought we were very brave or very foolish because they lived in Victorian and Edwardian houses and felt that our products didn’t fit. Thankfully people now recognise that you can mix new with old and be eclectic in their taste.” To give you an idea of what you can buy, the owners have selected 5 products for you to admire …
Indish Product Selection
- Milkman Bag by Brit-Stitch, £90
- Leaning Man Side Table by And Then Design, £150
- Brick Cushions by Normann Copenhagen, £56
- Fox Tray by Donna Wilson, £30
- WOW Bluetooth Speaker by Kakkoii, £55
Although the shop isn’t very large, the products very much speak for themselves and provide the main focus in the store. The curated collection features some of the most desirable designed and affordable products in Crouch End. They like to engage their customers through the innovativeness, wit and liveliness of what they sell.
The one piece of advice they would pass on to anyone thinking of opening up their own store is – “don’t expect to make big bucks overnight. Do it if you love what you sell and have patience and commitment to stay the course and try to find adequate finance.”
