We recently had a lovely lunch at The Garrison on Bermondsey Street in London SE1. Living nearby, I hadn’t visited in some time but was drawn back by their new focus on fish dishes, which my partner loves. The Garrison prides itself on using fresh British produce and sourcing ingredients from local Bermondsey suppliers, British farms and fisher folk. For those searching for fish restaurants near London Bridge or the best places to eat on Bermondsey Street, try The Garrison.
“Established in 2003, The Garrison has become a fixture in Bermondsey; having switched to a fish menu, it is worth reacquainting yourself,” Homegirl London.
The Garrison Menu
During our visit, they had some nice Nibbles like Homemade Focaccia with Arbequina Olive Oil, Nocellara Olives and Wild Mushroom Arancini with Parmesan Emulsion priced at £4 – 4.50. We chose the latter and were super happy with the delicious breaded, fried risotto balls with a rich mushroom flavour. Other Appetisers included Loch Duart Salmon Tartare, Pickled Mussels, Cured Mackerel and Sika Venison Bresaola. These cost from £7 – 14.
For my main course, I went for the vegetarian/vegan option of Autumn Squash on a bed of Split Red Lentils in a Smoked Tomato Sauce, garnished with Crispy Sage. It was both visually appealing and tasty.
The Newquay Fish and Chips were the choice of my dining companions, featuring two sizeable chip-shaped Potatoes, Battered Fish and Pureed Mushy Peas. They both commented that it was exceptional. Other Fish options included Newquay Turbot for two, Brixham Monkfish, St Ives Seabass, Polruan Bream and Lock Duart Salmon. Fish mains cost £20 – £55. Meat lovers can opt for one of the Steaks or Middle White Porchetta priced around £24-26 if you want to share the Salt Aged 1.2kg Sirloin on the Bone that will set you back £100.
The side dishes were varied and tempting, with options like Confit Hispi Cabbage with Romesco and Chimichurri, which I can vouch for. I resisted the House Chips with Salsa Vert to save room for Dessert.
To finish my meal, I chose the Lemon Posset with Gingerbread and Mulled Fruits, a perfect choice as the festive season approaches. My companions enjoyed the Sticky Toffee Pudding with Butterscotch and Crème Fraiche. Other options included White Chocolate Cremeux with Passion Fruit Curd and Sorbet priced from £809.50. Or you may be tempted by the Neal’s Yard Stichelton Blue with Apple, Cider Chutney and Oat Biscuits at £14.
