I met some friends for lunch at The Laundry, Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, London SW9. This bustling all-day neighbourhood restaurant, café and wine shop offers menus for brunch, all-day and Sunday Roast. Inspiration is taken from classic European bistros, neighbourhood bars and cafés that have influenced Antipodean duo Melanie Brown and Sami Harvey’s travel adventures. Aside from the stylish interiors, you enjoy the large terrace at the front of the historic Walton Lodge Edwardian laundry building dating back to the 1880s. If you’re looking for the best lunch places in Brixton, Sunday Roasts on Coldharbour Lane or brunch in SW9 or Sunday, you’ll love The Laundry.
“Set inside a historic wash house, The Laundry is the perfect setting for a leisurely lunch on the terrace in the heart of buzzy Brixton,” Homegirl London.
The Laundry Lunch Menu
Start with a few nibbles like the Smoked Almonds or buttery Nocellara Olives to stave off your hunger. For something heartier, try the Beef and Chilli Meatballs, bathed in a simmering Pomodorini Ragù and adorned with a subtle hint of Smoked Mānuka Feta.
We dived straight into the starters by trying the creamy Burrata with the freshness of Peas, Broad Beans, and a zesty liaison of Lemon and Mint, all grounded with the earthy texture of Buckwheat. However, the Heritage Tomato Salad, dressed in a spritely Yuzu Vinaigrette, sounded tempting. For meat eaters, the Rare Roast Beef Salad entwines the rich Umami flavour with a contemporary touch of Gravy Mayo and fresh Horseradish. Meanwhile, the Prawn Cocktail with spicy Mary Rose Sauce and Miso-Cured Salmon are perfect for seafood fans.
For our main, we tried the Vegan Sweetcorn Fritters paired with a Heritage Tomato Salad with a gorgeous Green Goddess Dressing. Meanwhile, fish eaters would appreciate the Crab Linguine or Herb Crusted Cod. Meaty mains are Bavette Steak and Rolled Pork Belly with an Umami-rich XO Sauce. The seasonal specials included Roast Chicken for two with Baby Potatoes and a Summer Salad.
Add a side if you’re feeling super hungry. We tried the Fries, although a small portion, they were perfect. I was interested in the baguette partnered with Whipped Butter but resisted because we had ordered the Cauliflower Cheese with Sage and a whisper of Truffle in the Gratin. Also available was a Green Salad with House Vinaigrette, Honey-Glazed Carrots and Charred Broccoli with Garlic and Pickled Chilli.
We tried a couple of desserts; the petite Lemon Tart with an excellent pastry from the specials board and the Coupe Danemark with Vanilla Ice Cream, Chocolate Sauce, Whipped Cream and Afghan Honeycomb.
Other options were Affogato with Hot Caravan Espresso, Warm Chocolate Chip Cookie with Vanilla Ice Cream, Passionfruit Sorbet, Frozen Rocky Road and Pavlova with Peach, Mango and Kiwi.
