The Monmouth Coffee Company is dedicated to sourcing and roasting exceptional coffee beans from single farms, estates, and cooperatives. They prioritise the pursuit of great taste while fostering sustainable, fair, and equal trade relationships with their suppliers. In 1978, they embarked on their coffee roasting and retailing journey. Initially operating from the basement of their shop on Monmouth Street in Covent Garden, they derived their business name from this location. Presently, their roasting facility resides at Spa Terminus in Bermondsey, where they ingeniously converted five arches into spaces for roasting, tasting, and offices. I’ve visited all three locations, sampled the coffee and enjoyed a few croissants!
Monmouth Coffee, Croissants And More
Their coffee selection varies seasonally, so checking their online list and experiencing the flavours in-store before purchasing is advisable. The detailed descriptions include information about the country of origin (Bolivia, Peru, Costa Rica, Ethiopia, Guatemala), specific regions, farms, owners and a compelling depiction of each coffee’s taste profile.
Additionally, you can acquire the Monmouth Espresso, a medium to dark roast with notes of toasted almonds, fruity tones, balanced acidity and a smooth body. The Monmouth Organic, a medium to light roast, offers delightful hints of toffee, chocolate raspberry, fruity acidity and a cocoa finish.
If you love their coffee, you can buy it online or visit one of their shops. They offer whole-bean and ground coffee and accessories such as ceramic filter cones, filter papers, and more. If you pop in-store, you can try their Filter Coffee, Espresso, Macchiato, Piccolo, Cortado, Flat White, Cappuccino and Iced versions of the Filter, Espresso and Latte.
To complement your coffee experience, indulge in a Buttery Croissant, Almond Croissant, Pain au Chocolat, Pain aux Raisin, Brioche, Cheese Swirl, Brownie, Florentine, Ginger Nut Biscuit or Canelé. Fresh Pastries are from Little Bread Pedlar, Sweet Treats from Sally Clarke and Canelés from Babelle. I highly recommend trying the Almond Croissant and Pain au Chocolat.
Monmouth Coffee Shop Locations
The original Monmouth Coffee shop can be found at 27 Monmouth Street, Covent Garden, London WC2H 9EU. It operates from Monday to Saturday, between 8 am and 6 pm. While seating is limited indoors, they offer street tables and chairs, allowing you to soak in the vibrant atmosphere of Covent Garden. Read my Ten Things To Do In Covent Garden and Seven Dials Covent Garden articles. (I took the above picture a while ago, Monmouth Coffee have now stopped using paper cups).
Monmouth Coffee at Borough Market is consistently bustling, often with queues extending out the door. Inside, you’ll discover a central communal table with leaning shelves against the walls. The address is 2 Park Street, London SE1 9AB, and the opening hours are Monday to Saturday, from 7:30 am to 5 pm. While there, take the opportunity to explore Borough Market and Borough Yards, adding to the excitement of your visit. I adore the branch of Monmouth Coffee at Spa Terminus, located at Unit 4 Discovery Estate, Bermondsey, London SE16 4RA. However, it’s only open to the public from 9 am to 4 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Although there is no indoor seating, you’ll find a couple of leaning counters outside and an outdoor bench near one of the entrances to the industrial park. While you’re there, I recommend exploring Spa Terminus, a collection of food producers in railway arches that open their doors to the public on Fridays and Saturdays from 9 am to 4 pm.
